Pittsburgh, PA – An elevated fire weather threat has been issued for portions of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia today due to a combination of dry conditions, strong winds, and low humidity.
According to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh, sustained south winds of 15-20 mph, with gusts reaching 25-35 mph, will contribute to increased fire danger throughout the region. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop to between 15% and 30%, while fuel moisture levels remain low, ranging from 10% to 15%.
The affected areas include Pittsburgh, Butler, and Mercer in Pennsylvania, as well as New Philadelphia, Cambridge, and Wheeling in Ohio and West Virginia. Officials warn that these conditions could lead to the rapid spread of any fires that ignite, particularly in locations that have received minimal rainfall in recent days.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and to be cautious with potential ignition sources such as discarded cigarettes or machinery that could spark a fire. Fire departments and emergency management officials remain on high alert for any fire outbreaks.
The fire weather risk is expected to persist throughout the day. Authorities advise monitoring local weather updates and adhering to any burn bans or restrictions in place.
