Charleston, WV – Officials are warning residents across West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia about an increased risk of wildfires today due to dry conditions, low humidity, and gusty winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, WV, a lack of recent precipitation combined with relative humidity levels as low as 15 to 30 percent and wind gusts between 15 and 25 mph will create conditions favorable for fire spread this afternoon and evening.

Authorities caution that any ignition source could quickly become uncontrollable under these conditions. Residents are strongly urged to avoid outdoor burning to reduce the risk of wildfires.

West Virginia’s spring fire season runs from March 1 through May 31, during which outdoor burning is prohibited between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Similarly, Ohio prohibits outdoor burning from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of May, while Kentucky and Virginia have restrictions from February 15 through April 30, with additional limitations on burning near wooded areas.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local emergency alerts and take precautions to prevent accidental fires. Firefighters and emergency responders are prepared to handle potential outbreaks, but officials emphasize that prevention is key.
