Columbus, Ohio – Dangerous heat and scattered storms are set to impact central Ohio by midday Tuesday, July 29, putting residents on alert for flash flooding and oppressive humidity.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, heat index values could approach 100°F by early afternoon across Columbus, Delaware, and Pickaway counties. A chance of thunderstorms will follow, with locally heavy rain likely between 2 and 8 p.m. Tuesday. These storms could overwhelm drainage systems and reduce visibility on major routes, including I-70, I-71, and U.S. 33 during the evening commute.
Although Tuesday morning may begin with sunshine, conditions will deteriorate by mid-afternoon. Residents should stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and secure outdoor items in advance of storms. The chance of precipitation rises to 30% Tuesday and increases to 50% by Wednesday.
Heat and humidity continue through Wednesday, with another round of storms expected after 11 a.m. Winds could gust up to 20 mph. Some areas may see rainfall totals exceeding a half inch.
Cooler, drier air finally arrives Thursday night into the weekend, with more comfortable highs in the low 80s.
