Ohio starts the day locked in a deep December freeze as Arctic air presses across the region. Breath hangs in the air, sidewalks crunch under frozen boots, and the cold feels instant on exposed skin.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. for much of central and southern Ohio, including Columbus. Wind chills range from 5 to 15 degrees below zero, with actual air temperatures near 3°F early this morning.

The cold poses real risks. Prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Residents heading out early should dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Pets should remain inside, and outdoor workers should take frequent warm-up breaks.

Travel conditions remain mostly dry, but extreme cold creates hidden hazards. Any moisture on roads can flash-freeze, especially on bridges, ramps, and untreated side streets. Roads may look clear but feel slick under tires. Plan extra time and drive cautiously through the morning commute.

Conditions improve gradually Tuesday as sunshine returns and highs climb into the mid-30s. Melting during the afternoon may refreeze Tuesday night, keeping black ice concerns alive into early Wednesday.

By Wednesday, temperatures moderate into the low 40s, offering a noticeable break from the cold snap. Clouds increase late, signaling a pattern shift. On Thursday, rain becomes likely, with highs near 51°F. Models hint at colder air returning behind the system, raising the possibility of a brief rain-to-snow transition late Thursday night.

Looking toward the weekend, unsettled weather continues with fluctuating temperatures and periodic rain chances. It’s a reminder that winter patterns are fully in place as December travel ramps up.
