Ohio – Snowflakes swirl briefly under streetlights as cold air rushes in across central Ohio this morning. Pavement turns slick fast, especially on bridges and overpasses, catching drivers off guard during the early commute.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered snow showers are moving through the Columbus and Wilmington areas early today, producing light accumulations up to one-half inch. While totals stay low, falling temperatures below freezing combine with gusty winds to create slick spots, particularly on untreated roads.

West winds gusting 25 to 35 mph add to the challenge, blowing snow across lanes and reducing visibility at times. Drivers should slow down on major routes like I-70, I-71, I-75, and Route 33, where quick bursts of snow may briefly coat roadways. Allow extra travel time this morning and watch for sudden icy patches.

As snow showers taper off later today, colder air continues to pour in. Temperatures struggle to climb, then drop quickly again tonight. Lows fall into the low 20s, increasing the risk of black ice wherever snow melts and refreezes. Side streets, ramps, and parking lots may turn slick before Saturday morning.

Saturday brings improvement. Skies turn partly sunny, winds ease, and highs rebound into the mid-40s, offering a calmer window for errands and local travel. Sunday turns colder again, with sunshine but highs near 34°F, keeping a winter feel in place.

Looking ahead to Christmas travel, meteorologists are watching a developing winter pattern. While widespread hazardous weather is not expected yet, models hint at temperature swings next week, raising the possibility of rain changing to snow at times as colder air returns.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Saturday: Partly sunny, high 45°F
  • Sunday: Sunny, high 34°F
  • Monday: Partly sunny, high 38°F
  • Tuesday: Rain possible, high 48°F
  • Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, high 51°F
