Columbus, OH – As winter weather approaches, the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is urging residents to review and update their home emergency preparedness kits to stay ready for storms, power outages, and other hazards that can strike without warning.

According to Ohio EMA, having multiple reliable ways to receive emergency updates — including a battery-operated or hand-crank weather radio — ensures families can stay informed even when power or internet connections are lost.

Officials recommend keeping at least three days of water and nonperishable food, a flashlight, extra batteries, a first aid kit, and key personal items such as prescription medications and important documents. Pet owners are also encouraged to prepare pet emergency kits with food, leashes, and carriers.

Preparedness experts say families should store their kits in easily accessible locations at home, work, and in vehicles. Kits should be reviewed every 6–12 months to replace expired supplies and adjust for changing household needs.
