Cleveland, Ohio – Swimmers and boaters are being warned to stay off Lake Erie through Friday night as strong northeast winds churn up dangerous marine conditions along Ohio’s shoreline.

According to the National Weather Service Cleveland, Small Craft Advisories and Beach Hazard Statements take effect as early as 10 p.m. Wednesday and remain in place until 10 p.m. Friday. Wind gusts up to 30 mph and waves peaking at 6 feet are expected from Toledo to Conneaut, making lake access hazardous for small vessels and swimmers. Rip currents, rough surf, and limited visibility will pose added danger along beaches from Cuyahoga to Erie counties.

Waves will be highest Thursday morning into Friday afternoon, with beachgoers around Cleveland, Lorain, and Ashtabula facing the greatest risk. Coastal roads and marinas may experience minor flooding or spray. The advisory is in effect from 12 a.m. Thursday for the central basin and 4 a.m. for the eastern basin, where hazards extend through Friday evening.

Beachgoers should avoid entering the water and heed all warning flags. Boaters are advised to postpone lake travel or remain in port. NWS officials say conditions will begin easing late Friday as winds subside.
