Ohio – Flags snap hard and clouds race overhead this morning as strong winds surge across central Ohio. Roads stay mostly wet for now, but conditions are primed to change quickly as colder air pushes in during a critical holiday travel stretch.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Wind Advisory remains in effect through early this evening. West winds increase to 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph possible across central and southern Ohio, including the Columbus metro. Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects and bring down a few tree limbs.

In Columbus, temperatures hover in the upper 40s early, then slide steadily downward through the afternoon. Skies stay mostly cloudy, with a slight chance for spotty snow late today. Drivers along I-70, I-71, and I-270 should watch for sudden crosswinds, especially on exposed stretches and overpasses. High-profile vehicles may have difficulty maintaining control.

By tonight, colder air settles in. Lows dip into the low 20s, allowing any lingering moisture to freeze. Slick spots could develop late, particularly on bridges and lesser-traveled roads. Plan extra time if traveling after dark.

Tuesday remains cold and mostly cloudy, with highs near the upper 20s. Winds ease slightly, but the chill lingers. Attention then turns to midweek. By Wednesday, clouds thicken, and light snow becomes more likely Wednesday night. While accumulations appear light, even minor snow could impact New Year’s Eve travel.

New Year’s Day 2026 looks cold but quieter, with partial sunshine and highs near the upper 20s. Winter conditions remain in control as the first days of the new year arrive.
