Columbus, Ohio – Localized flash flooding is now a growing concern across much of Ohio as daily rounds of showers and storms continue to saturate soils and strain drainage systems heading into the weekend.

According to the Ohio River Forecast Center, parts of southern and central Ohio have already seen more than 3 inches of rainfall over the past week, with another 2 to 4 inches possible by Wednesday, July 23. The heaviest rain is forecast for the Ohio River and Lake Erie drainage basins, including areas near Dayton, Portsmouth, and Youngstown.

Communities in flood-prone zones like Zanesville, Athens, and along I-70 and U.S. 23 are particularly vulnerable to rapid runoff and poor drainage, which could cause street flooding and basement backups. The National Weather Service advises residents to avoid driving through flooded roads, monitor local alerts, and prepare for possible brief power outages or detours.

This pattern of persistent rainfall resembles past mid-summer flood events and may also lead to minor river flooding, especially along the Scioto and Muskingum Rivers.

Flash Flood Watches may be issued in coming days as conditions evolve. Residents are urged to stay alert and check for forecast updates at weather.gov/ohrfc.
