CLEVELAND, Ohio – The first widespread frost of the season greeted parts of northern Ohio early Friday, marking the region’s sharpest fall chill yet. Temperatures fell into the 30s across inland counties, prompting the National Weather Service in Cleveland to extend a Frost Advisory through 9 a.m. for much of northern and central Ohio.
According to the NWS Cleveland office, areas away from Lake Erie’s immediate shoreline — including Medina, Lorain, Ashland, and Holmes counties — faced the greatest frost impact. Motorists along I-90 and I-71 may encounter light fog patches early, while commuters should allow extra time and watch for slick bridges. Sensitive plants and garden crops should be covered or brought indoors to prevent frost damage.
Friday’s sunshine will help temperatures rebound into the upper 60s, but cooler air will return this weekend as another weak front moves across the Great Lakes. According to forecasters, scattered showers may arrive late Saturday into early Sunday, briefly cooling highs into the low 60s.
By Sunday, October 12, skies should gradually clear with mild fall air returning — ideal for outdoor events, farmers markets, and leaf-peeping drives through the Cuyahoga Valley. Halloween planners can expect more seasonable highs in the mid-60s early next week, with lows moderating into the 50s.
Residents are urged to continue fall prep: drain outdoor hoses, protect garden plants, and check furnaces ahead of next week’s chill.
