Cleveland, Ohio – Drivers and evening commuters across northern Ohio could face sudden downpours and strong storms by 5 p.m. Thursday, with conditions deteriorating quickly into the night.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a sharp warmup will push temperatures into the upper 60s and low 70s by Thursday afternoon, setting the stage for a strong cold front arriving late in the day. Rain chances surge to 70–90% between 5 p.m. and midnight, with some storms capable of producing damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

Cities including Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Toledo, and Youngstown will see the highest storm coverage Thursday evening, especially along and north of I-71 and I-90 corridors. Visibility may drop rapidly during heavier downpours, and ponding on roadways could impact travel during peak evening hours.

Behind the front, temperatures will fall fast overnight into Friday morning, with some areas dropping into the 30s. Lingering moisture may mix with wet snow in parts of inland northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania early Friday.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices ahead of potential outages, and avoid unnecessary travel during the evening storm window. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the front approaches Thursday evening.
