Ohio – Wind scours bare pavement this morning, and the cold already bites through gloves. What follows could quickly turn routine winter travel into a high-impact weather situation across central Ohio.
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday morning through late Sunday night for much of central and west-central Ohio, including Columbus. According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a developing winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow along with bitter Arctic air, setting the stage for hazardous travel and flash-freezing conditions.
Today remains relatively quiet, with filtered sunshine and highs near the lower 30s. That calm fades fast. Temperatures plunge Friday night, dropping into the single digits as cold air deepens across the region. Wind chills may dip below zero by early Saturday, allowing snow to accumulate quickly once it begins.
Snow chances increase Saturday afternoon, with steadier snow likely Saturday night into Sunday. Total accumulations between 4 and 8 inches are possible across Columbus, Springfield, Dayton, and surrounding communities. Heavier bands could develop at times, sharply reducing visibility on I-70, I-71, and I-270.
Sunday brings little relief. Snow may continue through much of the day before tapering late. Even light snowfall could cause problems as daytime melting refreezes quickly after sunset. Roads, sidewalks, and parking lots may turn icy with little warning.
Travel could become very difficult through Sunday night. Drivers are urged to plan extra time, reduce speed, and avoid unnecessary trips during heavier snow. Keep emergency supplies in vehicles, including blankets, chargers, and a flashlight.
Looking ahead, the cold lingers into early next week. Below-normal temperatures remain locked in, and additional precipitation chances appear possible later as storm tracks stay active across the Midwest.
