Pittsburgh, PA – Strong thunderstorms could slam western Pennsylvania Thursday evening, bringing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a brief tornado risk before midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, an enhanced risk for severe weather now covers much of eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia, with storms expected between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. A cold front pushing in from the northwest will trigger the most intense activity, especially along and north of the I-70 corridor.

Communities from Pittsburgh to Cranberry Township and south toward Washington and Uniontown could see sudden wind gusts topping 60 mph, along with hail capable of damaging vehicles and roofs. In eastern Ohio, including Canton, New Philadelphia, and Coshocton, storm intensity may peak earlier in the evening.

Heavy rain is also a concern. Rainfall totals could exceed 1 inch in many areas, with isolated pockets approaching 2 inches, raising the risk of localized flooding. Low-lying roads and poor drainage areas may become hazardous late Thursday into early Friday.

Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours and ensure phones and weather alerts are active. Power outages are possible where stronger cells develop.

The severe threat should shift south and weaken after midnight, but rain may linger into early Friday. Additional advisories or flood watches could be issued if storms repeatedly track over the same areas.
