Louisville, KY – A sharp overnight temperature drop will push parts of the Ohio Valley into a damaging freeze within hours, threatening crops and outdoor plumbing before sunrise Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville and Jackson, Freeze Warnings take effect between midnight and 1 a.m. and continue until 10 a.m. Wednesday across central and eastern Kentucky, with valley temperatures falling as low as 26°F and widespread lows near 30°F.

The hardest hit areas include eastern Kentucky communities such as Pikeville, Hazard, and Morehead, where colder valley air will settle overnight. In the Bluegrass region, cities like Paris, Cynthiana, and Carlisle will also dip to freezing, increasing the risk for early spring vegetation and unprotected pipes.

While this alert is centered in Kentucky, the broader Ohio Valley—including southern Ohio and parts of southern Indiana—will see similar near-freezing conditions early Wednesday, especially in rural and low-lying areas.

Residents should cover plants, bring sensitive vegetation indoors, and insulate exposed pipes before 1 a.m. Avoid leaving outdoor water lines connected overnight, as localized freezing could occur.

Temperatures will rebound after mid-morning Wednesday, but additional cold nights remain possible through the week, keeping freeze concerns active across the region.
