Columbus, Ohio – A sharp pattern change will bring fall-like temperatures to the Ohio Valley next week, with some mountain valleys in West Virginia dipping into the upper 30s by Tuesday morning. Most of the region can expect overnight lows in the 40s and highs struggling to reach the 70s through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service, a broad trough will set up over the eastern U.S. beginning late this weekend, ushering in cooler Canadian air. The Ohio Valley, including cities like Columbus, Louisville, and Charleston, will sit at the core of the below-normal temperature zone from Sunday into Wednesday.

The chill will be most noticeable overnight, especially in sheltered valleys. In parts of eastern West Virginia, mountain hollows could briefly touch the upper 30s before sunrise Tuesday, signaling an early taste of autumn. Daytime highs will stay mild, ranging from the upper 60s in the higher elevations to the low 70s farther west.

Travelers and early risers should be prepared for jacket weather, especially in rural valleys where temperatures can fall quickly. Gardeners may also want to monitor sensitive plants if conditions trend colder than expected.

Cooler-than-normal weather is expected to persist into the second week of September, with the next pattern shift uncertain.
