Wilmington, Ohio – Drivers across southwest and central Ohio should prepare for a return to winter weather Wednesday as rain transitions to snow, creating the potential for slick roads during the afternoon and evening hours.

Rain is expected to overspread the region Wednesday morning, but conditions will begin to change by late morning into early afternoon as colder air funnels south. According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, rain will gradually mix with snow before changing fully to snow later Wednesday afternoon and into Wednesday night.

Light snow accumulations are possible across much of the region, including Wilmington, Dayton, Columbus, and surrounding communities. While the majority of locations are expected to see less than one inch of snow, even small amounts could lead to slick travel, especially as temperatures fall toward freezing. The highest chances for measurable snowfall extend from central Ohio westward into east-central Indiana.

Forecast data shows a high probability of at least a trace of snow Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night, with snowfall most likely during the evening and overnight hours. Road temperatures may initially remain warm from recent mild weather, but untreated surfaces could become slippery as snow continues and temperatures drop.

The Wednesday evening commute may be impacted, particularly on secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses. Visibility could also briefly drop during heavier snow showers, though widespread whiteout conditions are not expected.

Temperatures will continue to fall Wednesday night, allowing any slush or standing moisture to freeze. Overnight lows are expected to dip into the 20s, increasing the risk for icy patches into early Thursday morning.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. While this system is not expected to produce heavy snowfall, the timing during peak travel hours raises the risk for accidents.

Snow showers are expected to taper off late Wednesday night, but colder air will remain in place Thursday. Additional light snow chances are possible later in the week as winter weather settles back in across Ohio.
