Kentucky – Damp pavement glistens under low clouds across the Ohio Valley as mild air lingers, but winter is waiting just behind it. Conditions feel almost springlike early, yet a fast-moving system will flip the switch to colder, riskier travel by Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, temperatures rise into the low 70s Sunday as showers spread across central Kentucky. Winds increase during the day, adding a blustery edge for drivers. Rain becomes widespread by late afternoon, then mixes with snow as colder air pushes in Sunday night.
Louisville, Jeffersonville, New Albany, and Clarksville sit in the transition zone. While little snow accumulation is expected, the timing matters. Wet roads cool rapidly as temperatures fall into the upper 20s. Bridges, overpasses, and ramps along I-64, I-65, and I-71 may turn slick before early Monday travel ramps up.
Plan extra time if heading out Sunday evening. Reduce speed and watch shaded areas first. After all, flash freezing often causes more problems than snowfall totals alone. Gusty winds continue into Monday, making the colder air feel sharper and less forgiving.
By Monday, scattered snow showers remain possible, mainly north of the city, while highs struggle into the low 30s. Conditions calm later, but winter stays in control through midweek. New Year’s Eve Wednesday trends dry but chilly, setting up a cold start to New Year’s Day 2026 with highs near 30.
Meteorologists are monitoring additional systems as the final days of December unfold. More alerts could follow as winter patterns lock in across the region.
