Cincinnati, Ohio – Periods of heavy rain are set to move into the Ohio Valley late Thursday night, increasing the risk for river rises and localized flooding as the system pushes through Friday into early Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, widespread rainfall of 2 to 3 inches is expected across much of Kentucky and Tennessee, with lighter but still impactful totals extending north into southern Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia. Localized higher amounts are possible, especially near the Tennessee-Kentucky border, where soils are more prone to rapid runoff.
The rain will fall on already damp ground in parts of the region, allowing creeks and rivers to respond quickly. Along the Ohio River and its tributaries, including the Licking, Kentucky, Green, and Cumberland rivers, water levels may rise to or above action stage. Isolated minor flooding cannot be ruled out, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone communities.
Drivers should watch for water-covered roads, especially overnight Friday, and avoid crossing flooded areas. Residents near rivers are urged to secure loose items, monitor river gauges, and be prepared to move to higher ground if water levels rise quickly. Charging mobile devices and reviewing local flood plans is advised.
Drier conditions are expected to return later Saturday into Sunday, but river levels may remain elevated even after rainfall ends. Additional river statements or flood advisories could be issued as the event unfolds.
