Louisville, KY – Thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rainfall across the Ohio Valley this weekend, raising concerns about potential flash and river flooding in several states, including parts of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.
According to the National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, very humid air is forecast to support repeated rounds of thunderstorms through Monday morning, with rainfall totals expected to reach 1 to 2 inches in many areas. Isolated pockets may receive even higher amounts, particularly along a corridor stretching from eastern Illinois through eastern Kentucky.
Forecasters issued a 48-hour precipitation outlook Saturday showing widespread rainfall across the region, with flash flood and minor river flood risks concentrated in low-lying and urban areas. As of Saturday morning, river gauges in Illinois and Indiana were already approaching action stage levels, signaling the potential for minor flooding.
The threat of flooding is especially pronounced in areas where recent rainfall has already saturated soils. Local emergency management agencies are encouraging residents to remain weather-aware and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
The precipitation forecast, valid through 8 a.m. EDT Monday, underscores a broader concern for weekend travelers and communities near smaller rivers and creeks, which can rise quickly in these conditions.
Officials are urging residents in the Ohio Valley, particularly in flood-prone locations, to monitor local forecasts and be prepared to take safety precautions as needed.
