Indianapolis, Indiana – A surge of unseasonable heat combined with drying conditions is increasing the risk of brush fires across the Ohio Valley, with temperatures pushing near 80°F and vegetation drying rapidly through Sunday, April 12th.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky are expected to see above-normal temperatures during this stretch, while precipitation trends closer to below-normal levels at times, allowing fuels like dry grass and leaf litter to ignite more easily.

Across Marion County, IN, Franklin County, OH, and Jefferson County, KY, warming temperatures and periods of low humidity are drying out vegetation quickly. Fire officials warn that burning yard debris or unattended flames could spread rapidly, especially along rural corridors and wooded areas near I-65, I-70, and I-71. Residents are urged to avoid burning leaves and use extreme caution with campfires, grills, and equipment that could spark.

In Indianapolis, Columbus, and Louisville, the warm stretch will support increased outdoor activity, construction, and early spring travel. However, breezy afternoon conditions may further elevate fire spread potential, particularly in open fields and forested terrain.

This heat-driven pattern will persist through April 12th, with additional fire weather alerts possible if dry conditions intensify or winds increase.
