Wilmington, OH – Residents of the Ohio Valley may get a rare glimpse of the Northern Lights tonight as a severe G4 geomagnetic storm is expected to reach the region, creating visible auroras as far south as Ohio.

The National Weather Service reports that skies will be clear tonight with a low around 38 degrees, providing excellent conditions for viewing the aurora. The best viewing times are expected between 10 p.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday. Light winds from the east will make the conditions favorable for those in rural areas away from city lights.

This powerful geomagnetic storm, caused by solar particles hitting Earth’s magnetic field, could bring a vibrant light display to the skies, typically only seen in northern latitudes. This is the strongest event of its kind since May 2024.

Friday’s forecast for the Ohio Valley includes sunny skies with a high of 72 degrees, followed by a mostly clear night and a low of 48, providing another opportunity for stargazing.
