Pittsburgh, PA – A dangerous heat wave is set to grip western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia starting Sunday morning, with heat index values soaring to 105°F and little overnight cooling to provide relief.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, an Extreme Heat Watch will remain in effect from Sunday, June 22, through Wednesday evening, June 25, impacting a wide swath of the Ohio Valley, including Pittsburgh, Wheeling, Zanesville, and Morgantown. Temperatures could challenge or break daily records, with humidity pushing “feels like” values well into the triple digits.
Cities like Pittsburgh, Butler, and Greensburg could see heat index readings of 102°F to 105°F, especially during peak afternoon hours. In Ohio, Zanesville and New Philadelphia are under similar threats. Wheeling, Fairmont, and Kingwood in West Virginia will also face oppressive daytime heat and uncomfortably warm nights.
Health officials urge residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable populations like the elderly or those without access to air conditioning. NEVER leave children or pets in parked cars—even briefly.
The heat wave is expected to persist through midweek, with more warnings possible if conditions worsen.
