Columbus, Ohio – Triple-digit heat index values are putting millions at risk across the Ohio Valley as a heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday for Columbus, Dayton, and dozens of surrounding communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, heat index values will climb as high as 100 degrees Friday afternoon, driven by high humidity and persistent heat. The advisory spans central, southwest, and west-central Ohio, as well as parts of northern Kentucky and eastern Indiana—including Franklin, Butler, Hamilton, and Fayette counties.

Residents in Columbus and Dayton may feel little relief overnight, as warm evening lows hover in the 70s. Consecutive days of elevated heat are increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, older adults, and those without access to air conditioning.

Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity to early morning or evening hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Light clothing and shaded or indoor spaces are strongly recommended. In Cincinnati, cooling centers are open citywide, while rural counties like Highland and Ross may see increased EMS calls if the heat persists.

The advisory is expected to expire Friday evening, but forecasters say more heat alerts could follow into the weekend.
