Columbus, Ohio – Heavy rainfall is set to drench the Ohio Valley through Wednesday, pushing rivers toward flood levels and prompting concerns for low-lying communities and stream crossings.
According to the Ohio River Forecast Center, multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will continue through at least 8 a.m. Wednesday, May 21. Several areas—especially western Kentucky, southern Indiana, and southwestern Ohio—could receive 2 to 3 inches of rain, with isolated spots seeing even more.
The National Weather Service says river levels are likely to reach Action Stage and potentially Minor Flood Stage in several locations, including portions of the Wabash, Scioto, and Muskingum river basins. Flood-prone roads and underpasses could become impassable during periods of intense rain.
In Ohio, areas near Dayton and Cincinnati should watch for stream rises, while in Indiana, Evansville and Terre Haute could see minor flooding along tributaries. Louisville, Kentucky, may also experience street flooding, particularly in low-lying urban areas.
Residents are urged to clear storm drains, monitor local alerts, and avoid driving through water-covered roads. Those living near streams or rivers should secure belongings and have a plan in place in case evacuation becomes necessary.
Rain and river levels will be closely monitored; additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
