Wilmington, OH – Gusty winds and rapidly changing weather conditions are expected across central and southern Ohio today, with strong winds this afternoon, rain developing later in the day, and much colder temperatures arriving tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, southerly winds will strengthen through the morning, with the strongest gusts expected between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday. Wind gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph across parts of west-central and central Ohio, including areas near Dayton, Columbus, Sidney, and Kenton. Other locations, including Cincinnati, Wilmington, and Richmond, could see gusts between 30 and 40 mph.
Forecasters warn that the gusty conditions may make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles and could blow around unsecured outdoor items, such as trash bins and holiday decorations. Residents are encouraged to secure loose objects before winds peak.
Rain is expected to move into the region by mid to late afternoon, continuing into the evening hours. While widespread flooding is not expected, wet roads combined with strong winds could create hazardous driving conditions during the evening commute.
Despite highs reaching the 50s today, temperatures will drop sharply behind a cold front tonight. Low temperatures by Friday morning are expected to fall into the upper teens to lower 20s, raising concerns for slick spots where wet pavement freezes overnight.
Drivers are urged to use caution this evening and early Friday, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.
