Columbus, OH – Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that youthful drivers were involved in more than 154,000 traffic crashes statewide between 2023 and 2024, resulting in hundreds of fatalities and tens of thousands of injuries.

According to data released by the patrol on Sunday, crashes involving at least one driver between the ages of 15 and 24 accounted for 31 percent of all collisions during this period. Officials said actions by these young drivers contributed to nearly 63 percent of all crashes in the category and 66 percent of fatal crashes.

The report shows that at-fault crashes caused by youthful drivers led to 398 fatalities and 41,473 injuries. Authorities emphasized that while younger motorists are statistically more likely to be involved in serious incidents, safe driving habits can significantly reduce risks on the road.

State troopers urged drivers of all ages to prioritize sober driving, follow speed limits, and minimize distractions behind the wheel. Officials said modeling responsible driving behaviors for youth remains a key factor in improving roadway safety.

Ohio law enforcement continues to focus on education and enforcement efforts aimed at reducing traffic collisions involving youthful drivers. Public safety officials are asking parents, schools, and communities to reinforce safe driving practices to help lower the numbers in the years ahead.
