Columbus, Ohio – Sweltering heat will slam Central Ohio again Tuesday as heat index values soar past 104°F, making outdoor activity dangerous. The National Weather Service has extended a Heat Advisory through 8 p.m. Wednesday across much of Ohio, including Columbus and surrounding counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Tuesday will bring highs near 97°F with oppressive humidity pushing “feels like” temperatures to 105°F. The advisory covers Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, and Pickaway counties, among others, where excessive heat and humidity could cause heat-related illnesses.

Consecutive days of hot, humid air with little overnight relief raise the risk of heat exhaustion and stroke, especially for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel during peak heat, especially on major routes like I-70, I-71, and U.S. 23 where vehicle breakdowns could turn dangerous.

If you must be outside, wear loose clothing, hydrate frequently, and take breaks in the shade or air conditioning. Schools and summer camps should modify outdoor schedules, and utilities recommend minimizing high energy use during late afternoon hours.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible by Tuesday afternoon and evening, offering limited relief. However, the heat will rebuild Wednesday with highs still in the mid-90s before finally easing by Friday.

Heat-related alerts may be extended if conditions persist.
