Columbus, Ohio – Ohio residents should brace for an intense weather shift Wednesday as dangerous heat and scattered afternoon storms converge on central regions.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday, with heat index values near 100°F in Columbus and surrounding counties. By 2 p.m., scattered thunderstorms are expected to move in, potentially bringing damaging winds and localized flooding, particularly along the I-70 corridor.

The combination of heat and humidity presents a serious health risk. Officials urge people to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor work during peak hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Air-conditioned spaces are strongly recommended, as overnight temperatures offer little relief from the oppressive conditions.

Wednesday afternoon storms may interrupt commutes along I-71, U.S. 33, and Route 23, with rainfall rates possibly overwhelming local drainage systems. Winds could down small tree limbs and impact power in suburban Columbus neighborhoods like Worthington, Gahanna, and Grove City.

Showers continue Wednesday night, and while Thursday brings slightly cooler highs around 92°F, another round of thunderstorms is likely by late afternoon. The risk of flooding increases Thursday, especially if storms stall.

Warnings remain in effect through midweek, with more updates likely as conditions evolve.
