Cleveland, Ohio – Swimmers and boaters across Northeast Ohio should steer clear of Lake Erie today as dangerous rip currents pose a serious risk through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 11 p.m. Saturday for coastal counties including Erie, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake, and Ashtabula, plus northern Erie County in Pennsylvania. Wind and wave action are creating powerful currents that could sweep swimmers into deeper water near sandbars and piers. Officials are urging everyone to stay out of the water and avoid the shoreline today, especially near breakwalls and access points along Route 2 and I-90.

Sunday, June 1, flips the script. Sunshine returns with a high of 97°F and calm lake conditions, ushering in a much more summer-like pattern across the region. Monday follows with highs near 74°F, and dry skies holding through midweek.

By Tuesday, Cleveland could reach a high of 86°F, and temperatures stay in the mid-80s into Wednesday, offering ideal summer weather for outdoor plans. Humidity will build slightly, and the next chance for rain doesn’t arrive until Wednesday night, when thunderstorms could develop after sunset.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires may continue to impact air quality early in the week, though visibility is expected to remain at acceptable levels for most outdoor activity.

Looking Ahead:

  • Sunday: Sunny and hot, high 97°F
  • Monday: Breezy and dry, high 74°F
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 86°F
  • Wednesday: Sunny, high 86°F; rain late
  • Thursday: Showers, high 75°F
