Cleveland, Ohio – Swimmers and shoreline visitors across northern Ohio should steer clear of Lake Erie on Thursday, July 31, as dangerous rip currents and storms are expected to roll in by midday. The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Erie, Lorain, Cuyahoga, and Lake counties, effective late Wednesday night through Friday evening.

According to the NWS Cleveland office, powerful winds and wave action will create treacherous currents, particularly around sandbars and piers. Swimmers risk being pulled offshore rapidly. Thunderstorms are also likely Thursday morning through early evening, adding to the danger along the lakefront and nearby roadways, especially Interstate 90.

Heavy rain and lightning may arrive between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., with another round possible after 2 p.m. Thursday’s high near 75°F will be accompanied by northeast winds at 10 to 15 mph, gusting higher during storms. Up to a half inch of rain could fall.

Travelers and beachgoers should avoid entering the water, stay away from rocky piers or jetties, and monitor conditions before heading out.
