Cincinnati, Ohio – Wind gusts up to 60 mph could down trees and knock out power across southern Ohio through the early evening Wednesday, with storms moving into key travel corridors before sunset.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. for 18 counties, including Hamilton, Clermont, Athens, and Scioto. Storms may rapidly strengthen, producing damaging winds, frequent lightning, and brief torrential rainfall.
The most significant impacts are expected along the Ohio River and major routes like I-71 and US-52. Drivers in Cincinnati, Portsmouth, and Marietta could encounter sudden visibility drops below one mile and water-covered roads during heavy downpours. In hillier terrain across Athens, Vinton, and Meigs counties, saturated soil increases the likelihood of trees falling onto roadways and power lines.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and avoid non-essential travel during active storms. Local utilities are preparing for scattered outages as winds intensify.
Storm activity is expected to weaken after 8 p.m., though additional advisories may be issued if new thunderstorms develop later tonight.
