Fort Wayne, IN — A series of flood warnings have been issued across northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio, with river levels expected to rise beginning Thursday evening and persisting until further notice.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the Auglaize, Maumee, Saint Joseph, and Saint Marys rivers are all forecasted to reach flood stages this week, with some rivers approaching moderate flood levels by the weekend. Minor flooding is expected along the Auglaize River near Fort Jennings, impacting Allen (OH), Paulding, and Putnam counties.
Moderate flooding is forecast for the Saint Joseph River near Newville and Fort Wayne, the Saint Marys River near Decatur, and the Maumee River at Fort Wayne, affecting portions of Allen (IN), Adams, Van Wert, DeKalb, and Defiance counties.
In particular, the Saint Joseph River near Fort Wayne is projected to rise above its 12-foot flood stage by late Thursday evening, cresting at approximately 15.1 feet by Sunday morning. At this level, flooding of low-lying and agricultural areas near the river will likely increase.
Officials are urging residents in affected areas to monitor local news and weather alerts closely, avoid flooded roadways, and heed posted road closure signs. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains a key safety message as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Additional river forecast details can be found on the National Weather Service’s Rivers and Lakes page at www.weather.gov/iwx.
The next update is expected Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. EDT.
