Cleveland, Ohio – A powerful Arctic air mass is settling firmly over Ohio and Pennsylvania, setting the stage for a prolonged stretch of dangerous winter cold that is expected to last through the end of January and into early February. Temperatures are plunging this weekend, with overnight lows dropping sharply across both states and subzero readings likely in northern and western areas.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the pattern from Jan. 27 through early February strongly favors much below normal temperatures across the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians. This same Arctic outbreak is driving extreme cold across the Upper Midwest, where parts of Minnesota are nearing minus 60 degrees, while reinforcing persistent, bitter cold across Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The cold brings multiple hazards across the region. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are possible at times this weekend, especially across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, creating slick travel on I-70, I-71, I-76, I-80, I-90, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and secondary roads. Lake-effect snow remains a concern downwind of Lake Erie, while rapid temperature drops increase the risk of frost quakes, icy bridges, frozen pipes, and power strain.

While brief moderation may occur, no sustained warm-up is expected before Feb. 2. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor exposure, protect plumbing, prepare vehicles for extreme cold, and monitor updates closely as additional winter weather advisories and cold alerts may be issued while this Arctic pattern remains entrenched.
