Pennsylvania – Breath hangs in the air across western Pennsylvania this morning as metal railings burn cold to the touch. Sidewalks crunch underfoot, and the cold feels aggressive, even by winter standards.

According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect across the Pittsburgh metro and much of western Pennsylvania through late morning, with another advisory extending into Saturday. Temperatures near 7 degrees were reported early, while wind chills dropped below zero, creating a serious frostbite risk within minutes.

Across Allegheny County, light flurries linger, but the cold is the main hazard. Gusts funnel through river valleys and over bridges, making I-79, I-376, and the Fort Pitt Bridge feel even colder. Any moisture on roads can refreeze quickly, increasing crash risk during early travel.

This Arctic blast is tied to a larger pattern gripping the eastern U.S. The Great Lakes are nearly 50 percent frozen, allowing cold air to surge south and stay locked in. That setup keeps western Pennsylvania cold through the weekend, with little daytime recovery.

Sunday offers sunshine, but little relief. Highs reach only near 20 degrees, and winds keep it feeling colder. By Sunday night, lows fall back near 2 degrees. Meteorologists are also watching the potential for snow returning by Tuesday, as another system tracks through the region, raising the risk for slick commutes early next week.

Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook shows precipitation chances easing slightly while below-normal temperatures persist into early February. Winter remains firmly in control.

Residents should dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Check on neighbors, protect pipes, and plan extra travel time during the coldest periods.
