Ohio – Warm wind sweeps across downtown Cleveland this morning as thick clouds build over Lake Erie. The mild air feels almost like late spring, but that warmth is fueling storms that could turn dangerous later today.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, thunderstorms developing across northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania may intensify as they move east. Damaging straight-line winds remain the primary threat, with gusts potentially reaching 70 mph in the strongest storms.

Meteorologists say storms may organize into a larger line as they approach the Cleveland area. Heavy rainfall and isolated tornadoes remain possible, especially across communities east of Interstate 75 and along the Lake Erie shoreline.

Drivers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions across the region. Rain bands may reduce visibility on I-90, I-77, and I-71, while strong wind gusts could push vehicles across open bridges and elevated roadways. Wet pavement and blowing debris may create sudden slowdowns during the afternoon commute.

The warm air mass ahead of the system explains why temperatures surge into the upper 60s today. That warmth helps fuel storm development as a strong cold front sweeps across the Great Lakes.

Once the front moves through, conditions cool quickly. Winds shift northwest and temperatures fall sharply by evening, signaling a return to more typical March weather.

The pattern stays active later in the week. Showers may redevelop by Friday as another weather system moves through the Ohio Valley. By the weekend, temperatures cool further and a mix of rain and snow could develop across northeast Ohio.

Spring warmth is still expected to rebound later next week as longer-range outlooks hint at above-normal temperatures returning before the official start of spring on March 20.
