Cleveland, Ohio – Sunshine and warm lake breezes may make it feel like a perfect summer day across Northeast Ohio, but conditions are expected to change quickly. Building heat, dangerous Lake Erie currents and a growing threat for severe thunderstorms mean residents should stay alert through the afternoon and evening.

Summer heat is building across northern Ohio as temperatures climb toward 91 degrees, with heat index values briefly approaching 100 degrees in parts of Cuyahoga County. According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms covers the area this afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, although a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

The National Weather Service has also issued a Beach Hazards Statement from 10 a.m. through Sunday morning for the Lake Erie shoreline in Cuyahoga, Lake and Ashtabula counties. A high risk of rip currents is expected as strong winds generate dangerous wave action. Swimmers should stay out of the water and avoid piers, jetties and breakwalls where currents can become especially hazardous.

Adding to the concerns, an Air Quality Advisory remains in effect across much of Northeast Ohio because of elevated fine particle pollution. Smoke may reduce visibility at times, and people with asthma, heart disease or other respiratory conditions should consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity.

Meteorologists are also tracking a busy stretch of weather into early next week. Sunday turns noticeably cooler with a high near 79 degrees and mostly sunny skies. Monday warms back into the middle 80s before another round of showers develops Monday night. Rain becomes widespread Tuesday, with thunderstorms likely capable of slowing travel on Interstate 90, Interstate 71 and Interstate 77 during the afternoon commute. While the tornado threat after today remains uncertain, forecasters will continue monitoring storm potential.

If you have outdoor plans today, secure loose items before storms develop, charge mobile devices and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. Beachgoers should avoid entering Lake Erie until hazardous currents subside.
