Ohio and Pennsylvania – Residents along the Ohio River basin have a narrow window to prepare as repeated rounds of heavy rain beginning Monday threaten to drive river levels higher through March 11.

According to the National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, widespread totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected across Ohio and western Pennsylvania over the next seven days, with isolated pockets exceeding 7 inches. The heaviest rainfall is projected across southern and eastern Ohio into the Allegheny Plateau, increasing runoff into tributaries that feed the Ohio River.

In Ohio, gauges along the Scioto, Muskingum and Great Miami rivers are forecast to rise beginning Wednesday. Communities near Portsmouth, Marietta and Cincinnati could see river levels approach action stage, with scattered minor flooding possible late this week into early next week if heavier bands repeatedly track over the same areas.

In western Pennsylvania, the Allegheny, Monongahela and upper Ohio rivers near Pittsburgh are expected to respond by midweek. Low-lying roads, riverfront parks and flood-prone neighborhoods could see water encroach if totals trend toward the higher end of projections.

Residents should secure outdoor items, clear storm drains and avoid driving through water-covered roadways. Additional flood watches or warnings may be issued as rainfall placement becomes clearer through March 11.
