Edinboro, PA – Drivers across southern Erie County face a narrow but dangerous window of slick travel before sunrise Wednesday, as lake effect snow continues to coat bridges and untreated roads through 5 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for southern Erie County until 5 a.m., with up to 1 additional inch of snow and brief bursts of moderate snowfall reducing visibility and quickly freezing surfaces. Snow bands are expected to lift northward over Lake Erie by sunrise, but not before impacting early commuters.
Communities including Edinboro, Corry, and Union City are seeing the greatest impacts, especially on elevated roadways where temperatures allow rapid icing. PennDOT reports that overpasses and secondary roads may become slick within minutes during heavier snow bursts, creating uneven driving conditions across short distances.
Motorists are urged to delay travel until after 5 a.m. if possible. If driving is unavoidable, reduce speed, increase following distance, and carry emergency supplies including blankets, water, and a flashlight. Conditions can shift quickly as snow bands weaken and move.
The snow threat will ease after sunrise, but officials warn that icy patches could linger into the early morning commute. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions redevelop.
