Cleveland, OH – A major lake effect snow event is set to impact northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania beginning early Thursday and lasting through late Friday, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland.
A Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect for the snowbelt regions along and south of Lake Erie, including Trumbull County and inland Erie County, PA, where 8 to 12 inches of snow are expected, with localized totals up to 20 inches in persistent snow bands. Snowfall rates may reach 1 to 2 inches per hour at times on Thursday and Thursday night.
The heaviest snow will occur Thursday morning through Thursday night, with blowing and drifting snow caused by wind gusts of 40–50 mph. Visibility could fall below ¼ mile, making travel extremely difficult or even impossible in some areas.
In addition, a Gale Warning is in effect for Lake Erie, with winds up to 50 knots and waves as high as 12–18 feet in the central and eastern basins. Water levels may fall several feet below normal in the western basin.
A Wind Advisory also covers the broader region through early Thursday morning, highlighting the widespread nature of the high winds accompanying this system.
Travelers are urged to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel in warning areas.
- Allow extra time and use caution if you must drive.
- Secure outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages.
