Pittsburgh, PA – Thunderstorms could unleash 2-inch hail and isolated tornadoes across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon as a strong cold front pushes through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the threat to an Enhanced Level 3 out of 5, with the highest risk areas north and west of Zanesville, Wheeling, and Pittsburgh. The main concerns are damaging wind gusts, large hail—potentially exceeding two inches in diameter—and brief, isolated tornadoes. Impacts could begin late Tuesday afternoon and last into the early overnight hours, with exact timing still uncertain.

Cities including Pittsburgh, Wheeling, New Philadelphia, and Zanesville are urged to prepare for severe weather that could down trees, damage vehicles, and disrupt evening commutes. Residents should stay alert for rapidly changing conditions and have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings. Travel may become hazardous as storms develop, so avoid unnecessary trips, secure outdoor items, and keep mobile devices charged.

This marks one of the season’s most significant severe threats, with more updates likely as new weather models arrive. Enhanced risks remain in effect through early Wednesday, and additional advisories may be issued.
