Erie, PA – A cold and windy pattern developing after Thanksgiving could bring lake effect snow to areas downwind of the Great Lakes, including northwest Pennsylvania, northeast Ohio, and western New York, according to the National Weather Service in State College.

The NOAA Climate Prediction Center has outlined a slight risk of heavy snow beginning Sunday, Nov. 30 through Wednesday, Dec. 3, for typical snowbelt regions near Erie, Jamestown, and Cleveland.

Forecasters say the setup will favor strong northwest flow across the lakes, producing bands of heavy snow and sharply colder temperatures. While exact totals remain uncertain, travel impacts could increase early next week, particularly for Interstate 90 and other routes near Lake Erie.

“A windy and cold pattern after Thanksgiving could lead to heavy lake effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes,” the NWS said Sunday afternoon. “Snow may persist through midweek for northwest Pennsylvania and nearby regions.”

Residents in the affected corridor are urged to monitor updates as timing and snowfall intensity become clearer later this week.
