Darke County, OH – A Union City man was killed Monday afternoon after a lawn mower he was operating overturned and pinned him at the bottom of a ditch in rural Darke County, Ohio.
According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews responded around 12:45 p.m. to the intersection of Coletown-Lightsville Road and Zumburn Road. Deputies, along with personnel from Ansonia Fire, Union City Fire, and Union City Rescue, were dispatched following reports of a man trapped beneath a lawnmower after it slid down a steep embankment.
Preliminary findings revealed that 67-year-old Michael R. Roth was mowing a roadside ditch when his Toro mower lost traction and began sliding. The machine overturned and landed on Roth, trapping him beneath it. Authorities stated it remains unclear how long he was pinned under the mower before responders arrived.
Mr. Roth succumbed to his injuries at the scene, officials confirmed.
The Darke County Accident Reconstruction Team and the county coroner’s investigator are conducting a full investigation into the incident. Authorities have not released further details regarding the cause of the mower’s loss of traction or whether any mechanical issues were involved.
