Charleston, WV – Drivers across West Virginia will face hazardous visibility early Friday, then sweltering and potentially dangerous heat from Sunday through Wednesday, with heat index values climbing as high as 106 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Friday for Lawrence County, KY, and Kanawha, Lincoln, and Wayne counties in WV. Visibility could drop below a quarter mile, making morning travel treacherous. An Extreme Heat Watch is set to begin Sunday afternoon and last through Wednesday evening, covering much of central and western West Virginia, southern Ohio, and northeast Kentucky.

Cities like Huntington, Charleston, Parkersburg, and Ashland could experience days of oppressive heat with little overnight relief. Muggy conditions are expected to persist even after sunset, raising the risk for heat exhaustion, particularly for vulnerable populations and those without air conditioning.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, drink plenty of fluids, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. If possible, check in on neighbors, especially the elderly.

This could be one of the season’s first prolonged heat waves. Additional advisories may follow if conditions worsen or expand.
