Ohio – Bright sunshine and dry pavement are greeting much of the Cincinnati area this Sunday afternoon, but a major shift is taking shape just west of the Ohio Valley. The calm weather many residents see now will not last through the end of the day.
By late afternoon and evening, clouds will steadily increase across southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky. Conditions may deteriorate quickly as a stronger storm system approaches the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. Some storms could produce heavy rainfall, and localized flooding is possible where repeated rounds of rain move across the same areas.
The latest forecast shows Cincinnati reaching a warm 85 degrees Sunday before rain arrives. Rain chances climb to 100% Sunday night, with rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches possible. Additional showers continue Monday with an 80% chance of rain and highs near 80 degrees.
Meteorologists are also monitoring a broader Midwest storm pattern capable of producing flash flooding, strong winds, and isolated severe weather in parts of the region. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected in Cincinnati, a few stronger storms could develop Sunday evening.
Drivers on I-71, I-75, I-74, and the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway should prepare for reduced visibility and ponding water during periods of heavier rain. Plan extra travel time Sunday night and during the Monday morning commute.
For now, outdoor activities remain in good shape through much of the afternoon. Gardeners, festival-goers, and families heading outdoors should take advantage of the dry weather before conditions become wetter later today.
Sunshine quickly returns Tuesday and Wednesday with highs around 80 to 82 degrees, offering a welcome break after the rain.
