Granville, Ohio – Water levels along Raccoon Creek are surging before sunrise Friday, and low-lying areas near Granville could see flooding as the creek crests above flood stage within hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Flood Warning remains in effect until late Friday morning for Raccoon Creek near Granville. The creek stood at 8.3 feet at 1 a.m. and is forecast to rise rapidly to around 13.4 feet, exceeding the 13-foot flood stage. At that level, water begins encroaching on storage buildings near the Granville Water Plant before falling back below flood stage later this morning.
Widespread flooding concerns extend beyond Licking County. A separate Flood Warning continues until 9:15 a.m. for Clark, Clinton, Fayette, Greene, Madison, Montgomery and Warren counties after 1 to 2.5 inches of rain fell overnight, with another half inch to 1 inch possible. Law enforcement reports numerous road closures in communities including Xenia, Springboro, London and Waynesville.
Drivers should expect flooded low-water crossings and impassable rural roads. Turn around, don’t drown — most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Water levels are expected to recede late this morning, but additional updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
