Athens, Ohio – Flash flooding shut down roads and threatened neighborhoods across Athens County Monday evening as intense thunderstorms swept through southeastern Ohio.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for both central and southern Athens County until 8:45 p.m. Monday. Emergency management officials reported between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain falling rapidly, leading to dangerous flooding along Routes 550, Route 690, and several low-lying communities. Athens, Chauncey, Amesville, Coolville, Stroud Run State Park, and The Plains are all experiencing flash flooding or are at immediate risk.
Heavy rainfall has already inundated small creeks, city streets, and underpasses, with numerous roads becoming impassable. Local agencies are urging drivers to stay home and never attempt to cross flooded roadways. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains critical advice tonight, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Power outages and water damage are also possible in flood-prone neighborhoods.
Residents should move to higher ground and monitor emergency alerts, as more rain is possible. This event echoes previous flash floods in the region, with saturated ground increasing the risk of rapid rises in water levels.
The Flash Flood Warning stays active through 8:45 p.m., and more alerts may follow if storms persist.
