Columbus, Ohio –  An extended stretch of dangerous heat is on the way for much of Ohio, with heat index values expected to top 100°F from Sunday through Tuesday, potentially endangering residents across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, an Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for central and southwestern Ohio, including Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati. Daily highs will climb into the 90s, but humidity will push “feels-like” temperatures well above 100°F. Overnight lows in the mid-70s will offer little relief, compounding heat stress, especially for vulnerable populations.

Counties under the watch include Franklin, Montgomery, Hamilton, and Butler, with additional impacts stretching into northern Kentucky. Local emergency managers are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and check on elderly neighbors and pets.

Drivers are reminded to never leave children or animals in parked cars and to be mindful of heat-related illness symptoms such as dizziness and nausea. Schools and employers may adjust outdoor activities or hours of operation due to the health risks.

The heat watch remains in effect through Tuesday evening, and upgraded warnings may follow if conditions intensify.
