Cleveland, Ohio – Brutal cold is the main story across northern Ohio today, with wind chills plunging well below zero and scattered lake-effect snow showers lingering in the traditional Snowbelt during the morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, highs today will struggle to reach the middle teens across much of northeast and north-central Ohio, despite mostly sunny skies developing away from Lake Erie. Early this morning, wind chills ranged from 10 to 20 degrees below zero, with values hovering near zero even into the afternoon.

Lake-effect snow showers are expected to persist this morning in primary Snowbelt areas, including eastern Cuyahoga County, Lake County, Geauga County, and Ashtabula County. While additional accumulation should be light, brief reductions in visibility and slick spots are possible, especially on untreated roads during the morning commute.

Winds remain a factor today, adding to the bitter feel and increasing the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and ensure pets are brought inside.

The extreme cold will linger through the day, with gradual improvement expected later this week. Officials advise continuing to monitor updates as wind chill advisories remain possible during the coldest periods.
