Youngstown, Ohio – Early risers in the Mahoning Valley felt more like late October than early September on Sunday as temperatures plummeted to 39 degrees, tying a nearly four-decade-old record.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, the low was recorded at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport on Sunday morning. The reading matched a record set on September 7, 1986.

The chill settled across much of Northeast Ohio overnight, with cooler pockets along the Mahoning and Shenango valleys dipping well into the 30s. Gardeners are being urged to take note as temperatures in rural areas outside Youngstown fell even lower, raising the risk of early frost in sheltered spots.

Travelers heading out early noticed fog developing in low-lying areas, with visibility reduced along portions of Interstate 80 near Austintown and Route 11 north of Canfield. Officials caution drivers to slow down in patchy fog during the morning commute.

Temperatures are expected to rebound into the 70s by midweek, but the National Weather Service says another round of chilly nights is possible before a warming trend arrives.
