Wilmington, OH – Snow squalls and dangerously cold temperatures are set to sweep through Ohio starting Sunday, bringing hazardous travel conditions and frostbite risks. Residents should prepare for difficult driving and take precautions against extreme cold lasting into midweek.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow is expected Sunday morning and afternoon, with squalls creating low visibility and gusty winds. Total accumulations will remain under an inch, but roads may still become treacherous. An Extreme Cold Watch begins Sunday night, lasting through Wednesday morning, with wind chills plunging as low as -25°F. Frostbite could occur in minutes, officials warn.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and prepare homes for subzero temperatures. The NWS emphasizes the risk of hypothermia and advises leaving faucets dripping to prevent frozen pipes. Travel should be avoided during snow squalls on Sunday, particularly on I-71 and US-22, where whiteout conditions could occur.
The extended forecast remains bitterly cold. On Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, highs will reach only 10°F, with lows dropping to 0°F overnight. Tuesday will remain frigid, with temperatures between 12°F and -7°F under mostly sunny skies.
